With Prudence and Thanksgiving

I was raised in a very health-concious home; my parents only used whole grains, we never had refined sugar in the house, we gardened and ate abundant amounts of fruits and veggies, we rarely ever had processed food, and I only remember eating out at a restaurant a handful of times throughout my childhood. All that seemed to work, as we were hardly ever sick when we were children. (Incidentally one of my mother's favorite books on nutrition is SuperImmunity for Kids by Leo Galland, it really helped and inspired her. It is almost 25 years old however, so some of the information may be outdated as new research on nutrition continues to come out. As always, use your judgement and follow your feelings in implementing ideas from this book.)

I haven't been as diligent as my parents were in regards to healthy eating. I do only cook with whole grains, use natural sweeteners the majority of the time, we love our garden and eat lots of veggies. But we eat more processed food and refined sugar than I would like. We definitely have room for improvement! I have recently recommitted to be more careful in what we eat, so that I am truly nourishing my children and giving their bodies what they really need to function optimally. I totally agree with the quote, "The food you eat can be either the safest and most powerful form of medicine or the slowest form of poison." (Ann Wigmore)

My parents were very open to "alternative" natural medicine. They taught me that the Lord has given us many tools to use for the benefit of our health. It's like we have a big tool belt, and we can't think that a hammer will fix everything, because sometimes we need a screwdriver or a wrench. Each tool is valuable and useful for its unique purpose. Conventional doctors, medicine, and treatments are tools. Natural medicine such as herbs, homeopathics, and essential oils are also tools. Our stewardship is to learn about the tools the Lord has provided and inspired, then follow the Spirit as to which ones are appropriate and needful for each particular problem that comes along. I really appreciate the balanced and open-minded view that this has given me. I love the scriptures that say,

"And again, verily I say unto you, all wholesome herbs God hath ordained for the constitution, nature, and use of man—

Every herb in the season thereof, and every fruit in the season thereof; all these to be used with prudence and thanksgiving." (D&C 89:10-11)

"Yea, all things which come of the earth, in the season thereof, are made for the benefit and the use of man, both to please the eye and to gladden the heart;

Yea, for food and for raiment, for taste and for smell, to strengthen the body and to enliven the soul.

And it pleaseth God that he hath given all these things unto man; for unto this end were they made to be used, with judgment, not to excess, neither by extortion.

And in nothing doth man offend God, or against none is his wrath kindled, save those who confess not his hand in all things, and obey not his commandments." (D&C 59:18-21)

I am truly grateful for all the "wholesome herbs" and "things that come of the earth," and I know God created them for our use. I'm sure it pleases Him when we learn about these natural medicines that He has given us, instead of thinking that it's "weird" or "strange" to use them. I find this scripture at the end of Alma 46, in the Book of Mormon, very interesting;

"And there were some who died with fevers, which at some seasons of the year were very frequent in the land—but not so much so with fevers, because of the excellent qualities of the many plants and roots which God had prepared to remove the cause of diseases, to which men were subject by the nature of the climate—" (Alma 46:40)

I do use homeopathics with my children, like my parents did, and they have really helped with the sicknesses that have come our way over the years. My husband thought I was crazy when we were first married, but he has seen how many times the homeopathics have worked (and sometimes, most dramatically, on him). Homeopathics are a great tool, and since they do not have any side effects or reactions with any other medications, they are probably the very safest alternative medicine to use. When I choose the right remedy for a particular ailment (which is often a challenge because there are over 50 main ones to choose from), they really work to help the body heal itself. I found some great books to educate myself on the use of homeopathics. My favorite two that I refer to all the time are, Homeopathic Self-Care by Robert Ullman and Homeopathic Medicine at Home by Maesimund B. Panos. Others I have are, Homeopathic Medicine for Children and Infants by Dana Ullman and The Family Guide to Homeopathy by Andrew Lockie. I've had these for over 10 years, so I am sure by now there are some more great resources out there. I would be interested to hear of any recommendations any of you may have. Also, my favorite brand of homeopathics is Boiron. They are a European company, and as such have regulatory standards, similar to our FDA, to oversee the production of the homeopathics. In Europe homeopathics are much more mainstream, and not as "weird" as they are here in the U.S. The production of homeopathics is not regulated in the United States, so although I'm sure these U.S. based companies are doing their best, my opinion is that their quality and potency could be questionable. I just stick to Boiron. I just noticed that their website has a free Training Program Series which looks like a great introduction to homeopathy!

Though I have been using homeopathics for years, I hadn't yet ventured into other natural medicine. Since I have recently felt inspired to learn about and use the tools the Lord has given me, I have had a great desire to learn about essential oils and herbs. I really feel that herbs must be used with wisdom, as they are potent and powerful medicine. A careful study of each herb, the effects it has on the body in varying amounts and in different preparations, is essential in my opinion.

But where to start? There is an overwhelming amount of information on these topics, and it is hard to know who to trust and who to rely on for correct information. Again, I am profoundly grateful for the gift of the Holy Ghost. It is amazing to me how I can be lead to know what it true, even in secular things. By following my feelings, I found some resources that I have been comfortable with and I have learned so much already.

I looked into taking courses, but I don't have the money to spend a couple hundred dollars right now, so I kept looking for other educational options. And I found an excellent resource at HerbMentor.com. You can watch a video on their homepage that gives you an overview of what they offer. It is $10 a month, but I can already tell you it is SO worth it to me, and I can be a member of it for at least 2 years before it will cost as much as a typical herbalist course. I can learn what I want, when I want. They have courses, articles, videos, plant walks, interviews, and a forum to ask questions and get responses from expert herbalists. Love it!!! I have voraciously devoured the information, following the Spirit to know what is right for my family. (My only caution is that there are a couple herbalists that contribute to the site who have very different beliefs than we do, they may worship Mother Earth for instance. And though I value their knowledge of herbs, I absolutely do not agree with their beliefs. As with any site on the internet, use your own wisdom and discretion. The Spirit will always testify of truth.) The people who started HerbMentor are the ones who developed the game Wildcraft! that was mentioned in this post, here on Latter-day Homeschooling. And if you are a member of HerbMentor, you get 10% off at Mountain Rose Herbs, a very highly recommended source for organic, high-quality herbs.

I love how empowered I feel as I learn about the bountiful tools the Lord has blessed us with, both in the things of the earth, and in the knowledge that He has given to mankind. I know that as I use these tools with prudence, balance, and thanksgiving, God will bless me and my family. I know that His Spirit will be with me as I do my best to fulfill my stewardship as a mother in taking care of the health of my family.

What resources, books, and websites have you found that have taught you about natural medicine?

I am interested in learning this as well. I had the most amazing experience with herbs for allergies and asthma. I will never go back to medicine with nasty side effects.

I hope people list many resources because I'd love to take a look at them myself.

Thanks, Marcina.

I've been studying and using herbs, homeopathy and various natural modalities for years. But just the other day, I was struck by this phrase in the WoW: "all wholesome herbs God hath ordained for the constitution, nature, and use of man."

Constitution, in the world of homeopathy and herbs, has a specific meaning which has almost been lost in today's world. I have loved learning about "herb energetics," through an online course put on by the family that made the Wildcraft game (love it!) and Kiva Rose of bearmedicineherbals.com. Herbs are not "one size fits all," but they're also quite accessible to those who look, listen and observe. The principle of "by small and simple things are great things brought to pass" is also profound and true in the world of natural healing. Lots of good stuff out there. I've learned not to be overwhelmed, but to just start somewhere. Anywhere. Go where it takes you and move on when you're ready. It will be enough for you and yours. <3 Sally

I too feel that need to seek out and use more natural items to help aid in the healing of my families aches and pains as well as to boost up our immunity. The scriptures you mentioned are ones that I have been reading lately, as I am dealing with some health issues and I have been turning back to the more natural methods of healing that I have used for many years.

I have recently started using essential oils from a company called doTERRA. They are the best essential oils I have ever used! (DISCLAIMER: I am not a distributor, I just use the products). I have been very satisfied with the quality of products and how well they are working for my family.

Here are a few websites that you can use to learn more about how essential oils can help with many different ailments:

http://www.everythingessential.me/

http://www.builddoterra.com/ (check out the webinars and the education tabs - again, I don't sell these products, I am just a very satisfied user of the products)

Best of luck to you as you start to learn more about the wonderful healing powers of the herbs and plants that our Heavenly Father put on the Earth for our benefit!

Dana, I'd live more info on what helped you with your allergy/asthma situation. Please tell!

Hi Cody and Utahna ;)

To make a long story short...

I have always suffered with allergies and asthma. I often said we had a wing at the allergy and asthma clinic. A while back, I had a severe systemic reaction to poison ivy. Allergy meds and 2 rounds of steroids would not stop my body from reacting. As soon as the steriods were stopped, new places appeared and the reaction continued. I was desperate.

One of our authors Jenny Rosengrand knows much about these things and recommended I try nature's steroid (which was a mixture of astragulas and marshmallow root).

I started out with 5 of each twice a day (my reaction was severe)and I could soon tell when it had wore off, I would start itching like mad, then the other allergic symptoms would soon follow.

I had finally found something to provide relief without the side effects. I used it for months daily and then I ran out and realized that my body had stopped reacting to many of my allergens.

I went for a few months without needing to take anything - which was unheard of! I have since began a lower dose again as the pollen is really high right now and I have some returning symptoms.

You can check out both of those products mentioned above. They have been wonderful for me and I have a cabinet full of it for whenever I need it. My children and husband use it when they need to as well.

Does anyone have any suggestions for mood swings during that favorite time o-the-month? Since my molar pregnancy my mood swings have been crazy. I want to get off birth control but I'm so fertile I'm a little nervous.

Any suggestions?

Crazy Herb Girl said...

Dana, I'm so thrilled to hear the outcome with the marshmallow root and astragalus. I'd never heard if it had worked for you or not :-)

Andrea, without going into a ton about the herbal remedies...I'd lean toward a cleanse of your liver, starting first with your colon. There are reasons that one can have mood swings during that "time". If you'd like to know more of my recommendations you can email me at crazyherbgirl (at) gmail dot com. All the best, Jenny Rosengren

An amazing resource that I use all the time for my family is Herbal Home Healthcare by Dr. Christopher. He was an amazing healer and had a deep love for the Word of Wisdom as he was LDS. This book was also one of the texts from the first class taught by the School of Natural Healing (founded by Christopher). The class is the Family Herbalist online course. Usually around Christmas they offer a discounted price for the class as low as $100.

I love using not only herbs (which I also buy from Mountain Rose Herbs), but I love Primavera Essential Oils, and I use homeopathic remedies as well as flower essences.

I am so thankful for the varied natural ways in which Heavenly Father allows us to heal our bodies and spirits.

Dr. Christopher. I'm sure the women know, but none have mentioned, he was LDS and a 70. I'm inclined to believe he was inspired. There is a book called Joseph Smith and natural medicine, it has great history as well as Joseph Smith and natural foods. Maria Treben, she was a Swiss herbalist.
We also do a green drink in the summer that uses only herbs and pineapple juice. It is a great blood cleaner.

Thank you for your comments!

I have also been researching essential oils, and I purposely didn't write about them in my post because I didn't want to open a debate about the best companies to buy oils from. However, now that it has been mentioned, I will say this: I know that there are several MLM essential oil companies in the U.S. who have very passionate consultants who believe that their product is the best. I have oils from several of these companies. I believe that we all must do what we feel is right for our family. If you find a company and product that gives you results, then go for it. I do however, think it is possible that there are multiple companies with good quality essential oils, that no one company has the corner on the market of the world's pure essential oils. I intend no offense to anyone, I know this can be a passionate subject for many people. I know we are all trying to do the best we can...

These are my feelings, and I won't be insulted if you want to skip the rest of this comment, as it is rather long winded :)

I feel that caution be exercised in selecting essential oils, we need to try and get our hands on the most pure oils possible, so that they will have the medicinal properties we desire and will not do harm. The local health food store might not have the best quality of oils.

Please be careful and do your research, not taking all your information from just one company or one main expert. It is always wise, in my opinion, to find "two or three witnesses" so to speak, and make sure that there are multiple sources to back up any claims offered by a particular company as to what the oils will actually do, or the safety information on their proper use.

There are scientific and clinical studies that have been done on oils and their efficacy and safe use. I tend to trust European experts, as essential oils have been used there for much longer than in the U.S.

I have found in my research that there are two main schools of thought regarding the safe use of essential oils. The French tend to use a stronger dilution of the essential oils in a carrier oil and frequently use essential oils undiluted (they call this 'neat') on the skin, whereas the English tend to use the oils much more conservatively with a lower dilution rate (2.5% -3% for adults, 1% for babies) and rarely ever use the oils neat on the skin.

My feelings lean towards the English school of thought. I feel that essential oils are powerful and potent, and should be used with respect and caution. And if a little works well, why use a lot? After all, pure essential oils are very expensive and a precious resource. Tea tree oil, for instance, is often used neat on the skin when in scientific studies they have found out that a 2.5% dilution is actually more effective (I can get you the reference of that study, if anyone is interested).

Also, according to my research, there are several essential oils that have been proven to be skin sensitizers (meaning that you can develop an allergic-like reaction to them) and should never be used on the skin: cinnamon, clove, oregano, for instance (I can also get sources on those studies if desired). There are also some oils that are not regarded as safe for use on babies and young children, or by pregnant women.

Anyway, I could go on and on. There is a multitude of information out there. In summary, I think it wise to glean knowledge from several different sources and experts, and follow the Spirit as to what feels right for our family.

If you are interested in who, after all the research, I felt most comfortable purchasing my oils from, and what safety recommendations I believe are wise, email me at mlskyline3 at gmail dot com.

Oh yes Jenny, I've been amazed with your recommendation!

Sorry about the mis spelling of your last night - obviously it's because I think you are so "grand". Lol! :)

No problem, Dana! I've been called Rosencrantz, Rosenberg, Rosenthal, you name it. But I think I like Rosengrand the best :-)

Thanks for this post! I was lucky in that my husband was already "weird" by most standards and was really in to the natural approach to health that I'd grown up with.

My MIL and husband use Young Living's essential oils, though I'm more than happy to "shop around" for other pure essential oil products.

For Andrea - I began using Vitex (you'll also see it as Chasteberry Tree) to settle hormones after dealing with postpartum depression. It made the world of difference (so my husband says, and I believe he's not terribly biased). Also, since we got married (6 years ago) we've been using NFP and even went through the Catholic class. No surprises yet, and I'm Miss Myrtle. ;) Hope that helps!

I loved your post. I have been using herbs and homeopathic remedies for a long time now. 17 years ago I started with echinacea and astragalus. My last child, now 16, did not get sick very often. His first cold was at age 3. I did study nutrition in grad school and took a class at east-west herbs http://www.planetherbs.com/. I didn't have enough money to finish the course, so I just read alot.
I'm far from perfect in this, as I love chocolate and a little sweet something. I'm a big fan of adpatogens. lots of good info you gave here. thanks.
